The Truth About Video Games And Violence

We all know that the media and Jack Thompson love to blame video games whenever some psycho decides to whip out a gun and start killing people. Apparently, there are no more crazy people in the world - only people who play video games to the point of trying to emulate them in real life. I’m still not buying this argument though. If that were true, why don’t we see kids trying to jump down sewer pipes and smash turtle shells?

All these parent groups and law makers (I’m looking at you Hillary Clinton) need a scape goat, and video games are an easy target. Critics like to forget the fact that gangs and inner city violence were around long before Grand Theft Auto ever came around, and that people used guns to kill other people way before Doom surfaced.

What people like Jack Thompson and Hillary Clinton never bother to explain though, is WHERE they’re getting their statistics from. They have no direct proof of the correlation between video games and increased violence. In fact, if you look at United States Bureau of Justice Statistics website about the National Crime Victimization Violent Crime Trends from 1973-2005, you will notice that victimization rates are actually down in recent years.

In case the point still isn’t clear, here’s a graph charting the drop in violence, along with the release of all our favorite violent video games:

As you can see, there is no proof that these games have increased violence in America. Maybe someone outta fill Jack and Hillary in on it.
