LOTR Online - The Next Big MMO?

It seems like ever since World of Warcraft came out and pretty much stomped on every other MMORPG on the market, there still hasn’t been anyone to even come close to Blizzards success. I’m not sure any other game can come close to 8 million subscribers - so it’s kind of unrealistic to even put WoW in the same category as other MMORPG’s at this point.

With that in mind, I’ve been wondering who will emerge as the biggest 2nd place MMORPG. I guess you could argue there have been several strong competitors. Final Fantasy Online, Guild Wars, and Everquest 2 all have pretty strong followings. I think it’s time to throw one more in the mix though - LOTR Online.

Developed by Turbine, who also made Asheron’s Call and D&D Online, their games have had somewhat mixed reactions in the game industry. It seems like they may have finally perfected the formula however. Critics around the net have all given great reviews for their new game, and after watching this Game Trailers review I think this one has a real chance of gaining a foothold.

In addition to everything else, Turbine also has the already huge fan base of LOTR to rely on. I guess only time will tell, but as a fellow WoW burnout, this game looks like a nice place to hang my MMO hat for a while.
