After remaining tight lipped about StarCraft 2 for over 4 years during its development, Blizzard’s Rob Pardo - vice president of game design, recently sat down with MSNBC to spill the beans on their top secret project. The full interview is worth a read, but for an overview of what Pardo talked about, I pulled out a few of the major topics discussed.
- The reason it took so long between StarCraft and StarCraft 2 is because the team of 40 (one of the smaller teams at Blizzard) people wanted to work on the Warcraft universe after StarCraft. After the Warcraft Frozen Throne expansion, they started work on StarCraft 2, and have been since 2003.
- Everyone in the industry, including Blizzard themself, was surprised how well they were able to keep it under wraps. To keep it secret, they used internal code names, and no outsiders were allowed entry into the StarCraft 2 development area until the game was officially announced.
- It for sure won’t be released in 2007. Beyond that, he gave the typical Blizzard response - “We’ll release it when it’s ready”.
- Online play will feature a match-making system. In Warcraft III you had to press the “play game” button and it’d put you in a game with similarly skilled people. Blizzard plans on doing yet another improvement on that system for StarCraft 2.
- They want to make the game more exciting and enticing for spectators to watch so they have a lot of feature improvements planned there. Blizzard also believes a lot in their user-made map and mod community and want to integrate that better into Battle.net.
- The storyline will follow the main story arc that was left off in “Brood Wars” - just a couple of years after that in fact. You can expect to see many of the returning characters.
- And finally, probably one of the biggest questions on everyone’s mind. Will their be a fourth race? Pardo says no, that they wanted to focus on the three existing races, and fine tune the gameplay around those three.
