Wii Virtual Console Sets New Milestone

These days it seems like Nintendo can do no wrong. They’re on the fast track to becoming the #1 console with the Wii, they already completely dominate the handheld market with the DS, and now their virtual console is kicking ass and taking names. Nintendo announced today that gamers worldwide have already downloaded more than 4.7 million retro games, at a rate of 1,000 an hour since launch. Nintendo also just added the 100th VC game available for download.

So what’s the moral of this story? Gamers love Mario, and they love retro games. Just check out the top 5 downloaded VC games to date:

    1) Super Mario Bros.® (NES®)
    2) Super Mario 64® (N64®)
    3) Mario Kart 64™ (N64®)
    4) Super Mario World® (SNES®)
    5) The Legend of Zelda® (NES®)

I’m a bit puzzled that Bonk’s Adventure didn’t break the top 5. I guess there is a shortage of people out there who appreciate the finer things in life: beautiful sunsets, the smell of freshly fallen rain … smashing your head into dinosaurs and other prehistoric villains.
