In what would seem like possibly the most obvious statement of the year, Sony’s president Ryoji Chubachi was quoted in Tokyo Daily as saying “[Sony] does not rule out the possibility of lowering the price” of the PS3. Well, glad to hear they haven’t ruled it out - seeing as how every company eventually drops the price of consoles, this is about as vague as you can get.
According to reports, Sony president Ryoji Chubachi has accepted that the company “does not rule out the possibility of lowering the price” of the PS3.
The quote was picked up by Australia’s Daily Telegraph quoting Tokyo daily Yomiuri Shimbun. Speculation of a cut in price for the struggling machine has been rife, particularly following the company’s drop in price for its entry level Blu-ray standalone. However, Sony has hitherto insisted that that no plans for a cut are in place.
So does this mean a price cut is coming? The short answer, yes. The long answer, Sony is probably still evaluating the market to try and decide when is the best time to actually drop it. No time like the present, Sony. It’s interesting to note, that this statement comes right on the heels of Sony announcing they were laying off 80-100 employees, but denied it had anything to do with poor PS3 sales.
