Six Reasons Why “E For All” Will Become The Next E3

I’m starting to wonder more and more why E3 was ever changed to a new format. All it has done, is basically open the door for someone else to come in and take over the spot for the biggest game expo in the industry. Some people have speculated that perhaps other shows such as PAX or TGS would take over the spot, but here are six reason why E for All will become the new big fish in the pond.

Staff: Just today, Next-Gen reported that Carolyn Rauch, the former senior VP of the Entertainment Software Association (the trade group that put on the glam E3 of old as well as the new business-centric E3 Media and Business Summit), will be VP of event development at IDG World Expo (the company that is planning the E for All Expo at the L.A. Convention Center this October, among other events). With some of the same people driving E for All who were formerly in charge of E3, you can bet similarities will arise - which is a good thing.

Special Events: With a myriad of special events in addition to the expo itself such as Video Games Live, World Series of Video Games, and the art exhibit “Into the Pixel” - E for All features even more diverse attractions than the original E3.

Location, location, location: Now that E3 has moved to a new smaller location, E for All will remain at the LA Convention center which has far more space, and holds many memories of past E3’s. The familiarity of the location will keep people coming back, and it will feel like E3 simply because everyone is already familiar with the venue.

Accessibility: Let’s face it, 90% of people who went to E3 were people who cheated their way in (much to the chagrin of stuffy industry executives). That’s one of the things that made E3 such a big event - the expo left thousands of gamers walking away with new stories to tell their friends, post on their blogs, or argue about on message boards.

Hype: Having a small number of game journalists walking away from an event like the new E3 will not generate near the same amount of hype and excitement as a bigger event like E for All.

Exposure: Now that E for All has opened its doors to the masses, publishers won’t be able to refuse the opportunity to plant their product in front of such a large audience - even though many of them cited skyrocketing budgets as a source for opting out of the old E3. Like it or not, big expos are here to stay - and showing off your product at those shows is just one of the costs of doing business in video games.

In the end, every industry has that one “big expo” - mostly because the customer and market demands it. Whether its MacWorld for Apple fanboys, or CES for technophiles, video games are no different. With E3 bowing out of the competition, E For All will become the next “big expo” for the game industry.

I always regret not going to E3 the year it was in Atlanta and then later not going at least once. When i heard it was basically “going away” i was a sad panda. But now it seems we have a new big event to look forward to, so i may have to go to the opener for this one to make up for the missed E3’s, heh.
