    Got Game Music?

Today I got my hands on a review copy of “Best of the Best” - a tribute to game music performed by some of the game industries award winning composers. The company’s website has more information about the CD and individual composers, along with samples of the songs. The CD contains 18 tracks, all of which are reinterpretations of songs from your favorite video games:

Super Mario Brothers, The Legend of Zelda, Myst III Exile, World of Warcraft, Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Crackdown, Medal of Honor, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Super Metroid, Lord of the Rings, Earthworm Jim, God of War, Duke Nukem, Conan the Barbarian, Alone in the Dark, Silent Hill, Chrono Trigger and Roboblitz.

I guess depending on your musical taste, there is something for everyone on the CD. The styles range from electronica, techno, rock, symphonic, new age, to what I can only describe as 80’s sitcom style (I’m looking at you Gerard Marino with your Chrono Trigger mutation).

A few of the tracks I skipped right through after hearing the first 30 seconds, while others with a more subtle instrumental sound like “A Call to Arms - World of Warcraft”, “The White Horse” (Lord of the Rings), and “Medal of Honor Improvisation” kept me listening through the entire song.

Just like any music CD, it has its filler crap songs that you probably won’t like - not because the songs themselves are necessarily “bad songs”, but because the styles range all over the place, and not every song on the CD will be your style. Still, if you’re a huge fan of video game music, you may want to give this CD a chance, as it’s sure to have at least a couple songs you’ll like.
