    id’s New Game Engine Debut

At the annual Apple Developer’s Conference today, id officially announced their new game engine, being called ‘id Tech 5′, along with showing a tech demo of what it can do. Who would have ever thought id would debut their new game engine at an Apple conference of all places? I can still hear the collective groan of hardcore PC gamers everywhere. Joystiq posted a few snippets of what John Carmack had to say about it all.

Carmack introduced the technology, saying, “So the last couple of years at id we’ve been working in secrecy on next-gen tech and a game for it … this is the first time we’re showing anything we’ve done on it publicly.” He describes the demo happening on screen: “What we’ve got here is the entire world with unique textures, 20GB of textures covering this track. They can go in and look at the world and, say, change the color of the mountaintop, or carve their name into the rock. They can change as much as they want on surfaces with no impact on the game.”

Carmack finished off the tease saying, “We’re going to be showing on a Mac, PC, PS3, and Xbox at E3, we’ll have another Mac announcement at E3.”

I’m a bit surprised how much more developers seem to be supporting the Mac these days. Maybe because it’s easier to port games over to it since they switched over to Intel chips? No matter how you look at it, that’s a pretty wide array of platforms they plan on supporting. Click the images below for some screenshots of the demo shown by Carmack.

[Update: Right after posting this, I saw this article on Next-Gen that talks more about the engine, and why id has a new-found love for the Mac]
