FIFA Producer: The Wii Is Less Powerful Than An Xbox

If someone would have told me two years ago that this time around Nintendo would release a machine less powerful than the original Xbox, but that it would still manage to be the #1 selling console, I would have told them to quit smoking whatever they were on. But that’s exactly what’s happened.

In a recent interview with Eurogamer, FIFA producer Tim Tschirner said that he believes the Nintendo Wii matches up to the first Xbox in terms of power.

“It’s about as powerful as the original Xbox,” he said. “The video hardware unfortunately is not as powerful. There’s just a couple of key things that you can do on Xbox like shaders which you just cannot do on the Wii… Overall though it’s pretty much what the original Xbox was.”

The Wii’s video hardware isn’t even as powerful as the Xbox? Ouch! Yet, it continues to dominate both the 360 and PS3 in recent sales figures. This leaves me wondering … have we finally reached a new age in gaming? One where games are judged more on their gameplay than graphics? From the number of people waiting for Crysis and it’s ZOMG AWESOME!!!!1!1 DX10 graphics like the paparazzi waits for Brittney Spears to make her next public appearance, I’d say no. Rather, the Wii seems to have managed the oh-so-difficult task of gaining the interest of both hardcore fanboys and casual gamers alike.

Of course, the irony in all this is that even though the Wii is technologically the weakest of the three current-gen systems (and apparently last-gen systems as well), with the worst graphics, perhaps their was some truth to what American McGee said when he called it “The only true next-gen system“.
