    manhunt

Manhunt 2 is one of those games that, regardless its quality, makes for a great discussion. The fear is that releasing too many of these torturous games will eventually lead to regulation and censorship of all games.

It really comes down to whether you think video games are a form of art, or something different. As an art form, you never want something to be censored, or the artist to be pressured to change their content. I understand rating games. No problem. By all logic, it should prevent a kid from purchasing the game, even though there are ways around it. A kid somehow getting a copy of Manhunt 2, even with an Adults Only Rating, is similar to that kid sneaking into an R-Rated movie, or finding a box of his dad’s porn. Because the content is out there, there’s a chance he will find it. But I still don’t think that’s an argument to ban the game, such as the UK has done.

Now, if you think video games have no artistic merit, and are simply there to pass the time for kids, then of course you’ll want these games off the market. They have no value to society by that way of thinking. Then it would be the responsibility of the developers to censor and prevent these training tools of murder from being released. But where’s the line drawn? Would any Call of Duty games ever be released?

I definitely think the use of the Wii remote takes this a step beyond escapism, and that makes this a much more difficult discussion. But there must be an audience for this game. It’s probably the same people who love Hostel and other torture porn movies. I’m not against playing the game to find out for myself. As an adult, I want to have that option, because I know I won’t turn around and strangle my buddy when he forgets to lock the passenger side of my car. But it’s never about the adults, is it?

    Think of the children.
