We only have to kill 65,340,285 boars…

    This guy has no life.

We’ve all seen that episode of South Park where the “hardcore” gamer is seen in a very satirical manner, as having no life. The episode finds its hook in the fact that in order to compete with him, the boys have to abandon their own lives. One of the hottest debates over MMO gaming in general, especially wow, is the casual vs hardcore. The hardcore are usually unfairly stereotyped as characters that live in basements and have little human interaction and for some reason this is accepted as truth by thous who don’t know any better.

Casuals are contemptuous of the time raiders seem to spend in order to get as far as they’ve gone. The two biggest accusations made by casuals toward raiders:

    1. You are in the minority
    2. You don’t have a life

Robin Torres at Wowinsider gives us a very good article about this particular myth and why casual players seem to make these assumptions. I personally would like to be a hardcore player but my circle of friends are casual for the most part and i choose to roll with them. As a side note, the funniest part of this article is the notion of Jeff Kaplan calling arena gear “welfare epics”.

A good article, but I’m not sure how much I agree with her stereotypes about casual players. And saying that hardcore raiders are just more organized is a bit silly. The reason they’re more organized is because they’ve spent a lot of time running those instances to gain the experience needed to even know how to organize for such an event.

As a casual player with a few “hardcore” friends that raid a lot, I can tell you there is a distinct difference between the effort and time we put into the game … and it isn’t just that they are more organized than me.

I dunno, i personally see that kind of casual player everyday, they hold things up, they slow things down. The one of the most active raiding guilds on my realm only raids 4 hrs 4 days a week. Tack on the 4-8 hrs of extra time spent farming for consumables and just messing around in general and its STILL less time than i see supposed casuals in-game.

It doesn’t happen quickly by any means its a slow and steady process. But they follow the plan and stick to it. They take their game-time seriously and thats a notion that most casuals laugh at, and then wonder why they are behind the curve.

I mean hey Blizz knew they wouldn’t have the organization to get into the really good stuff, so those folks can get the welfare epics with little skill or planning.
